Spiders are usually quite harmless, but that doesn’t stop us from being utterly horrified at the sight of them. Sure, they might do good things for the environment, but there is something about them that’s undeniably icky.
However, they truly are fascinating creatures—especially this distinct spider that was recently found in China. If you can manage your fear, you’re in for a genuine treat! This particular spider is actually a member of an ancient species, and documentation of it has been limited. That’s why it’s so awesome that it was finally captured on camera!
This rare spider with an oddly shaped abdomen was found by a Chinese orange farmer named Li Wenhua. Wenhua originally didn’t think it was a spider at all, but some kind of ancient cultural relic.
As soon as he realized what it was, he contacted his neighbors, who quickly came over to look at the rare creature. They couldn’t believe what they were seeing. While experienced with critters of all sort, this was something new.
After an internet search, Wenhua saw that the creature was a Chinese hourglass spider, or li shi pan fu zhu in Chinese. This was reinforced by Zhao Li, head of the Insect Museum of West China.
It’s one of the earliest known spiders ever documented in China. It was rediscovered for the first time in the country’s Sichuan Province in 2000, and it was seen only 6 other times since then. It’s history is essentially something out of a fantasy novel…
“The spider has very high value in scientific research. It is an extremely rare species in Sichuan.” Li said. “I had spend great effort trying to find it, but I didn’t see one.” This creature was just that elusive!
The oldest evidence of the Chinese hourglass spider, a kind of trap-door arachnid, dates back to 2 B.C.E. It was stated in Er Ya, the oldest surviving Chinese dictionary, which was published sometime between 2 and 5 B.C.E.
Li is taking care of the spider for now, but ever since he has learned of its enormous value he has decided that he’d sell the spider to a good home, provided the price and the conditions are right. You’d have to be a real expert to take care of this creepy guy!
He might look different, but his behavior is common if you know anything about spiders. The Chinese hourglass spider makes his nest underground and uses his natural surroundings to keep himself hidden in order to catch the best prey for his next meal.
Knowing just how rare this spider is, there are sure to be many folks clamoring to adopt this unique-looking arachnid. He might not be warm and fuzzy, but he is absolutely exceptional in his own special way!
Can you believe that this farmer happened to stumble across such a rare find? These spiders don’t even look real; it just goes to show you that you never know when you’re going to come across something wondrous outside. Watch the Chinese hourglass spider in action below!
This spider is rather creepy-looking, but it’s unquestionably fascinating that something so rare has been documented. What an incredible moment for science!
